All ideas and info. provided here are to be discussed with your medical professionals. I am NOT Medically trained. I have merely had this vile disease since 1998 - always use your Common Sense and seek expert medical advice.
YOU MAY FIND THE LINKS in text and in the Right Sidebar of Help.
I can NOT vouch for any external site that I may direct readers to & therefore can NOT accept any legal responsibility - this is a personal blog of that which I believe only.
I do NOT believe there are magical cures hidden from us by our medical professionals though there are without doubt cases that seem cured as if by magic. Medical knowledge of this disease is very rudimentary and research frequently profligate but pointless!
However - sticking goji berries in your ear on a moonless night or similar WILL NOT HELP - Nor will the price paid for quackery be it here OR Mexico, Brazil or China!
There are many health care professionals trying their very best with great care and compassion but perfection is a little way off!
Be Minded:
I have cancer - cancer does not have me!

"Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once.
Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, it seems to me most strange that men should fear;
Seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come". - (Julius Caesar - Act II, Scene II).

I Have Been Fighting Cancer since 1997 & I'M STILL HERE!
I Have Cancer, Cancer Does NOT Have Me
Hi,

I face the next day or two with some interest!
This morning's post delivered a note from my Oncologist Jason Lester's secretary with an apology for having taken so long to source a CD of my CT scan. No apology needed Ceri I'm just so pleased to have it!

now all I have to do is puzzle out how to work the software and then how to try to understand the 'bits'.

I've had a look but have not really mastered the software yet (Yipee I managed to open the disc!).

There are literally 100s of slices of me looking kind of like this one I copied off of the internet until I can puzzle out how to use my own!
I must say the scoliosis in my spine due to the operation wound hernia is very marked.

I now have to puzzle out which bits are what - I must have a book or will find a web site that helps interpret it all. I HOPE.

Once I start to understand it and can work out how to put some of it on the web site I will do so to use specific scans of me to illustrate the specific parts of this blog.

All part of The Roller Coaster!

Hi,

on one of the many Forums I contribute to (most of which are political thought and debate - and discussion of world events with a smattering of other subjects!):

In answer to the comment most men seem to get prostate cancer
Prostate and bladder, sagittal section.Image via Wikipedia
 johnofgwent Said:
Yes, they do. I have no idea why, but surveys carried out in this country by the NHS proved a majority of men over the age of 50 "on the slab" had this cancer to some degree, but died of something else before the cancer had expressed itself to any great degree.
Midas rightly felt it apposite to query this:
Eh?? According to Cancer Research, there were 37,051 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in the UK in the last year for which they publish full figures (2008), that's approximately 0.12% of the male population....
My interjection was:

Hi,

I believe both of you are right.

John has stated a projected autopsy rate whilst Midas has presented a live diagnosis rate based on all age groups (which is a bit misleading).

It is a well founded belief amongst oncologists, I am given to believe, that most men over 60 or 65 have prostate cancerous cells, most over 70 have traceable prostate cancer but few will find time to die of it before something else spares them!

CAVEAT: many believe that a high PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) reading in the blood indicates cancer of the prostate.

I do NOT have prostate cancer but due largely to age and genetics I have an enlarged prostate and one of the lobes is notably enlarged - my PSA is thus very high as with a bigger but otherwise healthy prostate PSA output is high.

A high PSA in a random test is little more than an indication there MIGHT be enlargement and that the enlargement MIGHT be cancerous.

PLEASE NOTE - I am NOT qualified in this or any other medical field - merely experienced ;(

I hope this helps - so panic not John even if you are found to have a problem it may well be benign - and may I suggest Midas that you check if in doubt but be minded that few with prostate cancer are diagnosed in life and only a small percentage of those find it to be life threatening or terminal.

DO NOTE: The sooner ANY cancer is identified the better - do NOT permit your doctors to fob you off without providing sound and plausible reasons for urethral, vaginal or anal bleeding - ALL are un-natural (save for the obvious!0.

Do NOT accept any fob off for any type of prolonged dull ache pain from the pelvic or abdomen area nor any 'flash' pain that repeats from the pelvis or down the upper leg(s) from the pelvis.

7,500,000 people a year die from cancer each year - many could have been given extra years of quality life had they been diagnosed early.

YOUR HEALTH is YOUR responsibility and ignoring symptoms is foolish in the extreme.

Anyone who wants to chat about cancer or possible cancer is welcome to call me if you believe my 13 years of experience of this pernicious disease can help them and anyone just wanting a chatty look at cancer do read my blog.

JUST TO TIDY UP:
It is a prostate gland and not as many seem to name it prostrate!

The prostate is a male specific gland producing a sugary type nutrient fluid as a carrier for semen and thus a seminal fluid.

The gland is about the size of a walnut, though it tends to enlarge with age, and it is located at the base of the male bladder where the urethra (Drain pipe for the bladder!) passes through its center.

There is a belief that HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) may well be carried in these seminal fluids giving rise to HPV which if contracted young (before natural resistances have built up adequately) may well develop into cancer of the esophagus, rectum or vagina - dependent on ones practices!

For more information do read my blog. IF you feel it will help you opr a friend.

Regards,
Greg

Turns out that being in hospital is like war...

long periods of mind-numbing boredom, interspersed with short bursts of equally mind-numbing terror.

Where was I? Oh, yes. Chemo.

It turns out I have "difficult" veins. I've always had this problem and am the bane of all IV-inserters' professional lives. Yesterday I got in here by about 2pm and at 2:30, three different nurses had tried to put in a functioning IV into my arms and hands in four different places. On the fifth try, we got it to work, but the decision was made to surgically insert a veinous catheter which will have to stay in my arm for about a month. Until the next round of chemo.

That was fun, requiring a short surgical procedure during which I learned that I have a robust resistance to local anaesthetics. Great fun to be lying on a table, with them digging around 5 cm inside your upper arm, dodging important arteries, and suddenly they hit a part that the anaesthetic hadn't found yet. Four tank-fuls of local anaesthetic later...Gah!

Oh, and no swimming for three weeks. I can lower myself into the pool, but I have to cover the bandage with plastic wrap and try not to get it wet. Fun fun!

This morning, I had another batch of water spiked with a large dose of anti-emetics, anti-histamines and various drugs that are meant to protect the stuff chemo drugs attack and that I need to keep. This kind of chemo kills the cancer but also the cells lining the bladder, and the kidneys and the brain, so as I've been having the IV drips of the deadly stuff, I've been given small doses of "antidoto" in the form of pills that dissolve in a glass of water to stave of "neurotoxicity".

I realise they have to tell you these things to keep you up with "informed consent" but really, there are a few things I might be better off not worrying about. They know the signs to watch for and are so attentive that I'm growing in confidence.

Today we had to wait seven hours for a surgical expert to come to insert the "pic" and the next bag of poison was delayed. I am just about finished the second batch, cisplatin, and am having mannitol as a chaser to keep my kidneys from failing. There is a gaggle of nattering Italian ladies chattering away all at the same time, clustered around my roommate's bed, and I am torn between being slightly jealous of their customary stick-togetherness, and relief that I don't have to be pestered all day by crowds of relatives. Such an Anglo misanthrope, me!

Every time the nurse comes in and hooks me up to another plastic bag of clear liquid, I ask the same thing: "Che cos'è?" One of the nurses is obviously becoming annoyed by my obsession with knowing exactly what and how much poison they're pumping into me. When they hooked up the Mannitolo, I asked again, and she said that it's just "the protocol. The doctor esplain it all!" From now on I will just crane up and read the label upside down and quietly type the name into Google.

The nurse has just come and added another one to the ever-growing stack of plastic bags and bottles of incredibly toxic substances on the little table in the room, all waiting to go into my arm. At the other end of the table, the roommate's six female relatives are clustered around a little portable DVD player watching home videos. (The three men are all chatting in the hall outside the door.)

There is always something slightly surreal about medicine.

Oh by the way, a little note for people planning on getting cancer in Italy, don't get it in the summer. The Gemelli doesn't have air conditioning. I got a friend to bring over a fan (and the weather has not yet reached the Terrifying Italian Summer-On-The-Sun tipping point where even a fan at full blast ten inches from your face is no relief) but I can't imagine what everyone else is doing. Sweltering I guess. The procedure room where I had the surgery was at least ten degrees hotter than my room. I can't understand how they manage it, but I'm a northern Celt and we don't do hot weather.

More gruesome details as events warrant.

Hi, but isn't chemo fun!!! I've been playing this game for 13 years and I'm still here annoying people! I finished chemo 2 weeks ago and so far I won the race - they are killing the cancer faster than they are killing me THEY THINK so now it is on to 20 hits of radiotherapy starting on the 11th. I'm also on Cisplatin but my chaser is Gemcetabine. I hope you don't mind I just nicked your article WITH LINKS and put it on my health site at: http://GregLW.blogspot.com - you may care to link to help others on The Roller Coaster! One way to safeguard a PICC Line is to use cling film - to bathe or shower! Have an immense amount of fun! Regards, Greg_L-W.

Hi,

well I went to bed relatively early for me last night and slept until 08:45 this morning which was a long sleep for me.

I have a strange flashing to the left eye in a semie circle to the left - it is on the periffery and intermittent - my guess is it is chemo related and a slight blockage somewhere on the optic nerve - I wonder if it will clear and if not when the brain will learn to ignore it!

Eventually after listening to the radio, as I do, for a while I got up - this was more a matter of my antibiotics were downstairs and I have to have them without milk intake for an hour before and two hours afterwards - thats the Ciprofloxacin twice a day tablet.

Bored and a bit dull headed but that passed by about 10:30hrs.

It is now 13:00hrs. and I must admit I feel very tired! It is almost an effort to stay awake - not me atall.

SNOTTY RECEPTIONIST
An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist who
shared offices with several other doctors. The waiting room was filled with patients.
.
As he approached the receptionist's desk, he noticed that the receptionist was a large unfriendly woman who looked like a Sumo wrestler.

He gave her his name.

In a very loud voice, the receptionist said,
"YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE; YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?"
All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at the very embarrassed man.
He recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied, 'NO, I'VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION, BUT I DON'T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS.'

The room erupted in applause

Hi,

well so far so good! I went to bed relatively early for me last night and slept QUITE well but only for about 2 hours at a time, but I'm used to that!

I must say I WAS feeling jaded when I woke and took a long time to get up - It is remarcably like a hangover with too little sleep and Dave said the effect on him was similar.

Dave has now finished his first battering with chemo but they weren't too happy as from neck cancer he has clear mets. to spots on the lungs, fortunately they seem to be fairly stable. He then 15 hits of Radio Therapy which left him very tired and with neck cancer it has hardly worked miracles for his swallowing or appetite - but I gather that is recovering and his next phase (No details yet) will be Radiation Therapy.

It does all seem like a huge experiment with a lets try a bit of this 'scientific' basis - IS IT Just luck?

Lee has just materialised with a pint of fruit - 2 Pears, 2 Apples, 1 Mango and fresh orange juice really very nice and avoids one of nthe complications of Chemo which for some is constipation. I tend to have about 2 pints of this or similar every day.

Clearly eating this much fruit can do one no harm and it seems to be the only way to consume fruit as Tesco is realistically our only source and their fruit is abysmal if you hope to eat it! Tesco fruit seems never to ripen which is either a case of remaining hard or moving directly to rotten!

I do wonder why Tesco try to pretend they can retail fruit as they are truelly incompetent at it and their fruit is a disgrace!

However I am perfectly happy to use chosen Tesco fruit and before it moves from brick hard to rotten cut it up and put it in the blender where mixed it comes up with a very passable smoothy of pure fruit.

DON'T try to eat Tesco Fruit it is disgusting in the main and nothing more than a con.

Right - its 14:30hrs. I think I will go and have a shower and then go for a gentle stroll either around Chepstow Castle or along the bank of The River Wye - see what takes my fancy once I've showered. All down to how my bloods are recovering as when O2 is low a shower leaves me feeling like I've just run half a marathon!!

I note Kirsty William's office hasn't sent me the budget report for The NHS in Wales in electronic form yet - They gave me a copy in hard form last week and it outright admits that The National Ass 4 Wales squandered £1Billion of NHS money to no medical gain!!

As soon as I get the electronic copy I'll post it with highlighting and notes on the blog!

These EU Assemblies are little more than an obscene joke providing a structure for bribery of ingrates to betray all around them for the gain of the centralised Kleptocratic QUANGOcracy.

Imagine politicians and their parasites in the Snivil Cervice openly admitting they stole £1Billion from the sick to spend on their pet political projects - They are truelly the scum of the earth aren't they!

Regards,
Greg_L-W.

Hi,

having had chemo on Wednesday I must admit it is rather kicking in today!

Last night was a real rubbish night of disturbed sleep - but I was not alone and Lee gave up on me being restless and vanished off to the other bedroom, as she is won't to do if I'm not sleeping properly!

I noted she was still awake reading at about 06:15hrs. this morning! I must have got up and wandered around at least twice an hour by then! If it wasn't what was clearly a Chemo headache with that bar of pressure across the forehead it was tummy or bladder discomfort that kept waking me!

Eventually I got up feeling as if I had a real doozie of a hangover at about 09:30hrs. as I was feeling progressively worse in bed! Eventually I had a shower and went for a VERY gentle walk locally which made me feel a bit better but brought it home to me just how few Red Blood Cells I have carrying O2 around! I'd also hazard a guess that my platelettes are around 50-60 judging by minor blood when I blow my nose.

We were due out for dinner this evening but it was on a confirmation basis so I'm afraid I ducked out when I spoke to Rae - Yes I could have made an effort but to be a wet blanket and feel mis. in someone elses house is not my style.

I expect Sunday to be relatively rough then I should start rebuilding my bloods - if I confirm to pattern. Astonishingly everyone keeps saying how surprisingly well I look so I guess I had better keep up the act! Acting well and laughing actually makes me feel a huge amount better - I just can't think why people do miserable!

I'm surprised I haven't heard from David in Shrewsbury as he was scheduled for a 'Peek & Poke' this morning (Flexi for bladder cancer, check uuuup) - I do hope he had an all clear again.
